Commission: Second birthday for the Commission von der Leyen – Actions and priorities

Two years have passed since the beginning of her term European Commission headed by Ursula von der Leyen, coinciding with 40th anniversary of Greece’s accession to the European Union.

Since its first day on 1 December 2019, the von der Leyen Commission has faced a number of unprecedented crises and challenges in terms of pandemic management, the economy and climate change that have led to unprecedented answers:

  • The European Commission has coordinated the supply of 4.2 billion vaccines to all Member States to vaccinate 76% of the EU adult population against the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • The EU digital COVID is a European success story and has a central role to play in facilitating free movement in the EU. To date, more than 710 million certificates have been issued. A total of 51 countries from five continents participate in the certificate recognition system and more will follow.
  • To stimulate the economy, we have created NextGenerationEU, the EU Recovery Program of over € 800 billion. In this context, Greece will receive almost 31 billion euros in aid and loans and grants and through the national Recovery Plan will strengthen and reform its economy.
  • The EU has adopted legislation that legally sets the goal of climate neutrality by 2050. To tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, the Commission has launched an EU forestry strategy to tackle deforestation, degradation and rehabilitation. forests.

In parallel with crisis management, the von der Leyen Commission is implementing its political priorities for a more digital, democratic and socially just Europe with a strong position in the world:

The Commission proposed one law on artificial intelligence with the aim of making the EU a global hub for excellent and reliable artificial intelligence, as well as a framework for a reliable and secure European digital identity, which will be available to all EU citizens, residents and businesses.

To build a Equality Union, the Commission has adopted policies and measures to address structural discrimination and stereotypes. A debate has also begun on the culture of the rule of law across the EU, according to the APE-MPE.

At the World Health Summit, co-chaired by the Commission and the Italian G20 Presidency, G20 leaders pledged to take action to speed up the end of the COVID-19 crisis everywhere and better prepare for possible future pandemics.

To better protect European democracies, the Commission has presented a series of proposals addressing, inter alia, the threat of outside interference in European elections. In 2021, the Conference on the Future of Europe was launched, which enables citizens to have a greater say in shaping the EU’s future priorities.
