Commission to Turkey: Urgent to make progress in respect of fundamental rights

Her representative CommissionNabila Masrali, emphasized that Turkey it must urgently make great progress in respect of fundamental rights, so that the decisions of its Justice are harmonized with the European courts.

In particular, Ms. Masrali states that the European Court of Human Rights “confirmed that Turkey failed to fulfill its obligations under Article 46 § 1 of the Convention to comply with the Department’s decision issued by the Court in the Kavala v. Turkey case on December 10, 2019″.

He adds that he “confirmed that the detention of Mr. Kavala it was politically motivated and an attempt to silence him and prevent other human rights defenders. His recent unjust conviction is inconsistent with respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.”

In addition, Nabila Masrali underlines that “the Turkey’s continued refusal to implement these rulings raises EU concerns about the compliance of Turkish justice with international and European standards».

“The EU urges Turkey to follow up on the recommendations of the Council of Europe on strengthening the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights and to implement the pending decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, in particular the one that calls for the immediate release of Mr. Kavala” concludes the representative of the Commission.
