Commissioner-Commissioner for the Environment: EU Green Paper makes economies more environmentally friendly

“Only One Earth. Let us stop pretending that there are others – and let us love what we have.” This was stated by Environment Commissioner Virginia Sinkevitsios on APE-MPE, on the occasion of World Environment Day, calling on governments and citizens to participate in the green transition.

“People are struggling with high energy prices, the supply chain is being disrupted, and we are facing the real risk of rising unemployment and high inflation at a time when a war is on the doorstep of Europe,” he said. as he characteristically stated.

He added: “It is not surprising if the environment escapes the minds of citizens.”

As he put it: “The EU is doing its job. With our Green Pact agenda, we are making societies and economies more cyclical, nature-friendly, future-proof and clearly healthier.”

“It’s our response to the crisis, of climate change, of nature and resources, which is now also evolving into an energy and food security crisis. It keeps Europe firmly on a green path,” the Lithuanian Commissioner told APE-MPE. .

“At the end of the day, it’s not the policies and regulations that make Europe green, it’s up to each of us.”

The statement of the European Environment Commissioner in the APE-MPE in detail:

“This Sunday, June 5, we celebrate World Environment Day, the largest international environmental day, with the theme” Only One Earth “- #OnlyOneEarth. And although I believe that every day should be dedicated to the planet that keeps us in life, there is something in this year’s theme that makes it very relevant.

Citizens are struggling with high energy prices, the supply chain is being disrupted, and we are facing the real risk of rising unemployment and high inflation, at a time when a war is on the doorstep of Europe. It is no surprise if the environment escapes the minds of our fellow citizens.

We may forget it, but its fundamental importance is never lost.

Having only one Earth on which we can rely for our survival, we must remember its vital role in what we do, in what we consume, in what we love. Nature plays a central role in literally everything.

We often hear that if we continue to consume resources at the current rate, by 2050 we will be consuming the equivalent of three Earth-like planets each year. These are the lands we do not have. So where do we go?

We have no choice but to start the changes that will transform us, that will allow a cleaner, greener, more sustainable life, in harmony with nature.

The EU is doing its job. With our Green Pact agenda, we make societies and economies more circular, nature-friendly, future-proof, and clearly healthier.

It is our response to the crisis, of climate change, of nature and of resources, which is now also evolving into an energy and food security crisis. It keeps Europe firmly on a green path.

But at the end of the day, it is not the policies and regulations that make Europe green, it is each of us.

In the run-up to 5 June, I encourage governments, civil society and the private sector to participate in the green transformation and challenge everyone to share their energy for the green transition.

Only One Earth. “Let us stop pretending that there are others – and let us love what we have.”
