Commissioner Johansson warned of a “huge risk of terrorist attacks” in EU countries

The European Union is currently faced with a particularly increased risk terrorist attacks because of the war in Gaza, European Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson warned.

“By war between Israel and Hamas and the polarization it causes in our society, with the upcoming festive season, there is a huge risk of terrorist attacks in the EU”, commented Johansson while attending a meeting of EU interior ministers in Brussels. The European commissioner referred to knife attack that occurred on Saturday in Pariswhich killed a German tourist and injured two more people, as well as in previous incidents.

Johansson pointed out that “extras will be made available 30 million euros for protection, for example, of places of worship”. European ministers will today discuss security in the EU in light of the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Also on the agenda for the talks is the Schengen free movement zone and reform of the bloc’s asylum and immigration system.
