Commitments coming from COP26 are encouraging, but do not resolve, says expert

The commitments made by Brazil and the main nations of the world to contain climate change at COP26 “are encouraging, but they do not solve the situation”, assesses André Ferretti, manager of Biodiversity Economics at Fundação Grupo Boticário and also a member of the Network of Specialists in Nature Conservation.

In an interview with CNN Radio this Wednesday (3), he explained that the commitments to reduce methane gas emissions and contain deforestation “are intentions”: “We need to monitor and charge global leaders for them to be effective.”

“We still haven’t achieved what everyone expects, which is proof of the allocation of specific resources for reductions”, he added.

The forms of demand, according to the specialist, go through reports by scientists, who monitor whether the promises are becoming a reality, and, in the personal sphere, through the population’s demands on government officials.

Even so, he believes that the moment is for a turning point. “With each passing year we realize that the global pressure is very great, from governments, companies and specialists.”

Ferretti is in the 16th participation in Climate Conferences and sees differences: “What I see from 2000 to 2021 is that today this topic is much more discussed and disseminated, we already see many things that were said would be important happening, such as electric vehicles, energy solar and wind growing.”

However, he makes a reservation: “The issues have advanced, but not at the pace we expected, it is possible to reduce emissions, but we need political will, with the resources of the world and technology, we will be able to achieve the goals.”
