Prices of 40 basic products had, on average, increased 29.44% above inflation between April 2020 and October 2021, according to calculations by the Brazilian Institute of Planning and Taxation (IBPT), released this Wednesday (16). ). In this period, inflation accumulated a high of 12.53%, according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
The main villain was beef, with an increase of 146.23%, which represents a difference of 133.70% in relation to inflation.
Other products that registered high are cassava flour (kg), with an increase of 102.40% above inflation, toilet paper (+89.16%) and sugar (+77.68%), in addition to mineral water , with an increase of 73.18%. Mortar also had an expressive growth, 60.18%.
“The successive price increases show that the inflation felt in the pockets of Brazilians is much higher than the official one, even more if we consider that only four of the 40 products had a price variation lower than the IPCA [Índice Nacional de Preços ao Consumidor Amplo]”, says the executive president of the IBPT, João Eloi Olenike.
The only products with a price variation below inflation were ballpoint pens (-6.72%), sandals (-5.69%), underwear (-2.43%) and notebooks of 10 materials (-1.62%). .
For professor of Economics at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) Joelson Sampaio, three main aspects justify the rise in Brazil.
“First, the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused a shock to global supply and, consequently, reduced the supply of products. Also the weather, especially the water crisis, which strongly affected agricultural production. There is also the issue of the exchange rate, which, when devalued, left the cost of production higher,” he explains.
Sampaio highlights that the lower-income population is the most affected by the rise in products considered basic. “It ends up being almost an additional tax.”
“Despite the few alternatives to escape the high, the consumer continues to have price research as a fundamental ally. In addition, trying to maintain good financial control can also help to minimize these impacts”, he concludes.
