Common statements by Taipei and Washington on the 36th anniversary of bloody demonstrations in Tiananmen in 1989

Taiwan President Lai Ching-T, and US Secretary of State Marko Rubio said people will never forget the suppression of China of protesters in favor of democracy in 1989 at Tiananmen Square, they said. These statements are made on the 36th anniversary of an event that Beijing considers taboo and for which it does not allow public events. The events in and around the central square of Beijing on June 4, 1989, when Chinese troops opened fire to put an end to the democratic protests led by the students, are not publicly discussed in China and the anniversary is not officially honored. Public memory ceremonies take place in cities outside the mainland China, including Taipei, where Taiwan’s senior government leaders often use this anniversary to criticize China and invite her to recognize what she did.
