Communication without borders: a function of translating messages appeared in VKontakte chats

Today, August 16, the social network VKontakte officially introduced a new function for instant translation of text messages in chats – now users can translate content into foreign languages. This feature is presented both in the original VKontakte application and in the corporate messenger VK Messenger – there it is possible to translate messages from Russian into English, Spanish and Portuguese. And, of course, the translation works in the opposite direction. Due to this, according to the developers, users of the social network will be able to get rid of the language barrier when communicating with foreigners. For example, it will be easier to make friends and communicate with residents of different fears, practice the language, learn something new, and so on.

Representatives of the VKontakte company stated that the translation of messages in chats is implemented solely on the basis of their own technologies and social network tools – no third-party equipment or software solutions are involved in this process. In order for the translated text to have the required quality, the company’s developers trained a neural network for reliable machine translation and language detection in text messages. During the learning process, the neural network was trained on data from open sources – as a result, it can even determine the features of the lexicon, as well as the manner of communication of social network users from different regions, fields of activity and with certain interests.

For example, company employees noted that VKontakte’s own technology perfectly recognizes slang, and is also able to translate text from both colloquial speech and artistic or official business materials. This means that the user will even be able to communicate on business topics with foreign partners, receiving a completely adequate translation and, accordingly, intelligibly answering the interlocutor. It works quite simply – in order to translate the text in the chat, you just need to call the context menu by long pressing on the message, and then select the “Translate” item in the drop-down list.

The most interesting thing is that you can listen to the text – this is a great opportunity to find out how certain words or even entire phrases sound in a foreign language. And although now you can only translate from Russian into English, Spanish and Portuguese (and vice versa), the developers of the social network promise to expand the list of supported language packs in the future.
