Competition Committee: Green light in the deal Masouti – SYN.KA Crete

The Competition Commission announced today that it approved unanimously, with no. 776/2022 its decision, the concentration announced on 4/3/2022 concerning the acquisition by MASOUTIS of the exclusive and joint, as the case may be, control over the wholesale and retail trade of supermarkets of SYN.KA CRETE, which consists of: among others, from retail and wholesale supermarket stores, business participations, contractual relationships, real estate and other assets.

Also, MASOUTIS will acquire joint control with SYN.KA CRETE in two local radio and television stations in Crete.

In its decision, the Competition Commission considered that this concentration, which concerns the supermarket retail (distribution market), the supply market, the supermarket wholesale market, the media television market and the purchase of non-media radio raises no serious doubts as to its compatibility with the operating requirements of the competition in the individual markets to which it relates.

In particular, in the retail market of supermarkets at distribution level, the Commission examined the prefecture of Chania, and the islands of Chios, Corfu, Thira and Naxos, calculating market shares locally, within a 10-minute drive for urban areas and up to 30 minutes by car to the semi-urban areas, in order to explore the competitive conditions on the part of the consumer locally.

The relevant assessment took into account the new entity’s total market share, the increase of the acquiree’s share, the shares of the main competitors as well as the fact that local supermarket chains are also active in the relevant markets and therefore there is an emerging variety. x. cash & carry), which can serve the various needs of consumers.
