Competition for mathematics teachers, record of failures

A record of failures in the cross test. The first results of the direct competition for recruiting have arrived six thousand teachers of mathematics, physics and computer science (Stem, acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) of middle and high schools.

In Liguria, out of 175 candidates for the teaching of mathematics in high school, only 23 were promoted to the oral exam, and out of 85 in competition for the chair of computer science they reached the oral 23. In Puglia, among the candidates for mathematics in high schools and technical institutes, one candidate out of ten (34 out of 339) was promoted, for computer science 96 out of 373.

Among the reasons for this bloodbath, the fact that many candidates who signed up over a year ago in the competition (later suspended due to the pandemic) and were caught off guard when the government decided to start the selections immediately. But also – as has been pointed out by some candidates – theexcessive difficulty of questions on quantum physics and the very high threshold to reach sufficiency (70 cents instead of 60).

Not only that: in some cases the number of those promoted to the written exam is lower than that of places available. For example, in Liguria there are 38 places for teaching mathematics, but only 23 candidates have passed, in computer science 23 out of 29 places available (and it is to be hoped that all those who pass the written exam will also be successful in the oral ). In Puglia, 34 candidates have passed the written test for mathematics, for 39 places up for grabs, and for mathematics and physics 7 out of 40.

The worst results in Lombardy, which is entitled to a fifth of all the places up for grabs: out of 192 places for high school mathematics teachers, 59 passed, out of 59 in physics, only 37 candidates passed and out of 186 in computer science, 128 were promoted. Campania, 62 promoted for 77 mathematics positions and in Veneto 80 promoted out of 92 positions.
