Complications may be related to venous access, says doctor about amputation in RJ

Gleice Kelly, 24, went to the Women’s Hospital in Jacarepaguá, in Rio de Janeiro, to give birth and left with her hand amputated. According to Glecei, the delivery was quick, but just as the doctor was sewing her, she noticed an excessive amount of blood.

She claims that the doctors assessed that she was having a hemorrhage. “They needed to run to do something, I had to go to the delivery room without any venous access. When I passed out this access was placed,” she reported.

The access was placed in the left arm, on top of the hand. “He was already a little red and swollen. At the time I thought it was a normal thing. No big deal, just that he was burning and a little painful. I talked about the pain and they said it was normal”.

In an interview with CNN this Tuesday (17), the president of the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB), César Eduardo Fernandes, said that the complications that led to the amputation may be related to the venous access.

“Everything seems to have resulted from the venous access. She made a venous access in that hand that was amputated. There were complications from that venous access”, says Fernandes.

The expert considers that the assessment is a hypothesis of what may have happened. “I’m going to talk about thesis and not about the specific case because, of course, I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if this patient has any clinical complications or any comorbidity, I don’t think so, it seems to me that she is an absolutely healthy girl from what is being reported ”, he points out.

Fernandes points out that the case should be thoroughly investigated.

“This case needs to be investigated in depth by authorities both from the judiciary and by authorities from the regional medical councils. Responsibilities must be ascertained to understand whether there was negligence, malpractice, imprudence in this case and, in this case, punish those responsible”, he says.
