Researchers have discovered that the ‘Conan bacterium’, one of the most resistant bacteria on Earth, can withstand radiation that is 28,000 times higher than what a human would withstand. The organism scientifically named Deinococcus radiodurans received the above nickname from Conan the Barbarian because of its great endurance. Scientists have long noticed its durability, and researchers at Northwestern University and the Uniformed Services University (USU) tried to see how it holds up to radiation. According to a publication of Interesting Engineering, to identify its secret, they created a new antioxidant, MDP, inspired by the power of the bacterium. They therefore found that MDP forms a unique complex of manganese, phosphate and a small peptide.
