Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Wednesday he hoped the referendum, which was recently announced on the possible annexation of the Russian-occupied Tsinvali (South Ossetia) region to Russia, “would not take place”.
Garibashvili said his government should “always be mobilized” and have “close communication” with its international partners on developments in the occupied territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
“I would like to express my hope that this [δημοψήφισμα] it will certainly not continue, but on the other hand, of course, we must not be complacent. We see the developments of recent years. Of course, we must always mobilize, [και] “That’s why we need to communicate closely with our partners, be in close coordination with them and constantly exchange information,” Garibashvili told the local press.
The prime minister noted that the de facto authorities in South Ossetia had previously made statements “several times” about holding a referendum on joining Russia.
On March 30, authorities in the Russian-occupied territory said that they were going to hold a referendum on joining the Russian Federation.
On April 1, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the United States would not recognize the results of any attempt by “Russia or its representatives” to “divide sovereign Georgian territory.”
