The concessionaire RIOgaleão, responsible for the administration of Tom Jobim International Airport, in Rio de Janeiro, signed this Monday (14) the document that allows the friendly return of the terminal to the Union. With that, the federal government will start another phase of the process for the airport to go up for auction again.
The return by the concessionaire took place within the deadline. RIOgaleão even appealed to the courts about the return process, with the aim of questioning collection clauses, but had its request denied last Friday (11).
According to the note released by the concessionaire this Monday, the signature of the document was made with reservations, since it considers as “abusive and illegitimate the inclusion of clauses that ignore the legality and validity of the payment schedule of the current contract”.
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, said that peace of mind is needed so that, with the entry of the new government, conversations can be established about the destination of the international terminal.
“I am personally looking for the president of RIOgaleão to talk about this and, a little later, I will make contact with President Lula’s transition team”, said Eduardo Paes.
In Rio de Janeiro, both Galeão and Santos Dumont airports are part of the federal government’s privatization plan. The expectation was that the two would be auctioned in 2023. However, due to the delay in the process, the CNN found out with the National Civil Aviation Agency, via the Access to Information Law, that the concessions should only be for the first half of 2024.
THE CNN asked for a position from the federal government on the return process of Galeão Airport and the concession process, and awaits the return.
