Once again, thousands of people clustered in São Pedro Square on the morning of Thursday (8) to see the first sign of smoke leaving the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
And for the second time, smoke was black, which means that no pope was still chosen, leaving a sense of disappointment in the air.
People began to leave the scene with lunch time approaching, after the cardinals could not elect a new pontiff after two new voting shifts on Thursday morning (8).
The crowd quickly withdrew, although many said they would return to the fourth – and potentially fifth – voting round.
“They need some time,” said Lydia, a tourist from Russia. “I didn’t expect them to choose a new Pope today.”
“I love the atmosphere. Everyone is so intrigued,” he added.
A Philippine said he had come to see the smoke last night (7) and was “a little disappointed” with the result this morning (8) was negative again.
She reported being excited that Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was considered a favorite to become the next Pope. He would be the first Philippine Pontiff.
“If the Holy Spirit gives him to Cardinal Tagle, it will be a great honor for the Philippines. But it is also a great responsibility – a great pressure,” she said.
People from all over the world went to the Vatican.
Some are in Rome just for a few days and expect the holidays to coincide with the election of a new Pope.
Others live close and say they will continue to return for the time it takes.
