Vatican officials settled on Friday (2) the chimney on the roof of the Sistine chapel, which will be used to burn the conclave notes that will elect Pope Francis’ successor.
The secret meeting begins on May 7, with the cardinals using the chimney to tell the outside world if they elected a new leader of the Catholic Church, which has 1.4 billion faithful.
Black smoke will mean that there is no decision, while Branca will announce that the 267th Pope was elected.
The workers fixed the rust pipe above the terracotta tiles of the fifteenth -century Sistine Chapel, known for its frescoes of Michelangelo.
The chimney is clearly visible from St. Peter’s Square, where thousands of people should gather during the conclave to see how the secret vote is progressing.
Francisco, who died on April 21, was a Pope since 2013 and was the first pontiff in America. About 133 cardinals, about 80% of them appointed by Francisco, should vote for their successor.
The last two conclaves, held in 2005 and 2013, ended at the end of the second day of voting.
