Conclave: Vatican releases renovation photos and preparation of the Sistine Chapel

The Vatican has released new images of the preparation and reforms being made in the Sistine Chapel for the Conclave, the secret election that will elect the next Pope. See in the gallery above.

It is possible to see repairs being made in paintings in the building, as well as wooden structures. The photos also show the installation of the chimney that is used to inform whether the cardinals have reached a positive result or not.

During the conclave, clerics cannot communicate with people from outside the Vatican. Authorities scan the chapel before the election in search of hidden cameras and microphones.

The election for Pope Francis’ successor will start on May 7th. Cardinals heard by the press expect the vote to last at most three days.
