Cooks and jackets, as well as maintenance teams and doctors, joined the members of the Vatican clergy on Monday (5) to take confidentiality before the next conclave, the secret electoral process that elects a new pontiff.
While the Cardinal Voters themselves will make their oaths in the Sistine Chapel during the beginning of the Conclave on Wednesday (7), support employees made their votes two days earlier in the Paulina Chapel, which is close to the place of choice of the next Pope.
The oath is mandatory for all designated to assist in the conclave, with automatic excommunication if it is broken.
The 133 cardinals have gathered almost daily to discuss issues faced by the Catholic Church, which currently brings together 1.4 billion members, before the conclave to decide Pope Francis’ successor, who died in April.
Mandatory procedures for the conclave
From Wednesday (7), the cardinal voters will be confined without contact with the “outside world”, and should make their first vote during the afternoon of the same day.
Already on subsequent days, the votes will happen twice, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. A two -thirds majority are needed for a new Pope to be elected.
According to the Conclave regulations, if no one is chosen after the first three days, the cardinals should make a full -day “prayer break” before continuing.
The only sign given to the outside world over deliberations will come from a chimney installed above the sistine chapel.
Cardinals will burn their banknotes, adding a chemical to create one of two smoke colors: black for an inconclusive vote; White for when there is a new Pope.
