Condolences of the Speaker of Parliament for the ousting of Marietta Giannakou

The President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Konstantinos Tassoulas, expressed his grief for the loss of the former minister and MP of New Democracy, Marietta Giannakou.

Mr. Tassoulas stated:

“With feelings of sadness and pain we learned the unpleasant news of the outbreak of Marietta Giannakou who was hospitalized for a long time at 251 GNA.

He has been a distinguished politician in the domestic and European political scene for a number of years. He was elected to the National Assembly five times, and four times to the European Parliament, where he was the head of the ND MEPs, while he served creatively in the Ministries of Health and National Education.

Her rich work includes her decisive contribution to the European Union’s policy against the scourge of drugs, to the expansion of citizens’ participation in European events, but also to the dissemination of the idea of ​​defense solidarity among the Member States of the Union. She also distinguished herself in the parliamentary arena, always consistent in her obligations as a representative of the people of A ‘Athens with a fruitful presence and creative interventions in the parliamentary dialogue.

Her international prestige and hard work were recently recognized again with her formal election in November 2020 as Vice President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, a position that was held for the first time by a Greek MP.

She started her enviable political career as an MEP elected in 1984 under the leadership of Evangelos Averof-Tositsas, at the age of just 34, and quickly justified her choice to lead the ND ballot in 1989 under the leadership of Konstantinos Mitsotakis. .

Leaving life today, our very worthy and much loved Marietta leaves an ever-living example of militancy, personal and political, national contribution and commitment to parliamentary and European values.
