The towers of a condominium in the Rubem Berta neighborhood, in Porto Alegre, remain closed after an explosion that hit the building in the early hours of Thursday (4). Eight people were injured and two firefighters were at the scene.
In a press conference, the Fire Department reported that in the tower where the explosion occurred, the entire structural part of the building was compromised. One floor collapsed and another upper floor was compromised.
According to the team, there is an imminent risk of collapse at this point in the structure and a “cascading effect” may occur, in which the part that is not compromised ends up being affected as well. In other words, structural collapse of other parts of the tower may occur.
Due to the danger of collapse, all buildings surrounding the epicenter of the block where the explosion occurred are also isolated. However, people are being allowed to access the building accompanied by a military firefighter to collect personal items.
The firefighters informed that only based on the technical engineering report will it be possible to say whether the building can be rebuilt and there will be a reassessment carried out by the construction company itself. There is no deadline for completing the report as it depends on the technical evaluation.
