During COP26, the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change in 2021, Brazil joined a group of more than 100 nations and committed to reducing methane gas emissions by 30% by 2030.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is also emitted by livestock, in addition to being present in industries.
For the vice president of the National Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA), Muni Lourenço, the pact will improve the efficiency of the agricultural sector in Brazil.
“The signing of this agreement may be an increase in the efficiency of Brazilian livestock, but for this we consider it important that there is investment,” said Lourenço.
The vice president of CNA also highlighted the need to give access to existing technologies to Brazilian rural producers.
“These technologies will be fundamental for the entire universe of ranchers in Brazil, who number around 2.5 million. With support for rural producers to make this additional effort contained in this agreement.”
According to Lourenço, Brazilian agriculture currently makes use of available technologies on two fronts: genetic improvement and animal nutrition.
Post-COP26
For the vice-president of the CNA, the post-COP26 discussions will be fundamental to outline national strategies to be adopted to reduce methane emissions.
“This debate on technologies, methodologies and goals in relation to methane reduction will be important in the post-COP debates. There is no individualized specification by country [para redução do metano]. After the COP, we will have this debate with the government to define our national strategies according to our peculiarities”, he said.
