A conference on World Food Security focusing on the global consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine is being held today in the German capital. This is an initiative of the German government and specifically of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Development and Agriculture in the context of the G7 Summit in Elmau, Bavaria (June 26-28).

Hunger has always been a challenge to the international community, said Foreign Minister Analena Berbok, but Russia’s war of aggression is taking on a new dimension, causing a “tsunami” of consequences.

Russia is blocking Ukrainian ports, destroying silos and grain warehouses, and blaming Western sanctions for the new global grain crisis, Burbok said, adding that Ukrainian sunflower oil.

“It will be a marathon”

“Putin clearly uses hunger as a weapon” and that is why Analena Berbok proposes the following axes for the Conference and the forthcoming G7: Accelerating Ukrainian grain exports, finding alternative routes for transporting grain, for example, through Romania, providing food and supplies aid to those affected.

“It will be a marathon,” said Analena Berbock. For her part, Development Minister Svenia Schulze spoke of the threat of the biggest wave of famine since World War II, stressing that not only energy but also food dependence on Russia must end.

German Foreign Minister Cem Etzdemir also stressed the need to switch to sustainable production methods in order to accelerate this de-addiction. Finally, it is worth noting that the press conference also mentioned the special role of Turkey as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine in the search for solutions to the unblocking of grain from the Black Sea.
