Confidence in services in Brazil rises to the highest level in 5 months in April, says FGV

Confidence in the Brazilian service sector recorded its highest level in five months in April, with the indicator of the current situation going to a maximum since 2014, showed data released this Thursday (28) by Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), indicating continuity of recovery ahead.

In April, the Services Confidence Index (ICS) rose 4.0 points to 96.2 points, the highest since November 2021 (96.8).

The Current Situation Index (ISA-S), an indicator of the perception of the present moment of the service sector, jumped 5.1 points, to 96.0 points, the highest level since April 2014 (96.3 points).

The Expectations Index (IE-S), which reflects the perspectives for the coming months, gained 2.9 points, to 96.6 points, the highest level since December last year (98.7).

“The result was disseminated among the main segments and more influenced by the segment of services provided to families, which seem to respond positively to the improvement of the pandemic after the Ômicron outbreak in early 2022”, explained FGV economist Ibre Rodolpho Tobler in a note.

“For the coming months, it is still possible to imagine continuity of recovery, given that the service sector was the one that suffered the most during the pandemic. However, more expressive increases still depend on an improvement in the macroeconomic scenario.”

Data released in the middle of this month by the IBGE showed that the Brazilian services sector had a volume drop of 0.2% in February compared to January, which indicates that there were difficulties in recovering in the period amid increasing inflation pressures and uncertainties about the economy.
