Confidence of industrial entrepreneurs declines in May, says CNI

The Industrial Entrepreneurs Confidence Index (ICEI) dropped 0.3 point in May, from 56.8 points to 56.5 points, according to data released this Wednesday (11) by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI). Despite the drop, the CNI reported that industrialists remain confident, as the index remains above the 50-point dividing line, which separates confidence from lack of confidence.

“The decline in confidence in May was mainly caused by a worsening of the industry’s perception of current conditions, particularly the current conditions of the Brazilian economy,” the entity said in a note.

The Current Conditions Index dropped 0.5 point to 49.4 points. According to the CNI, when it stays below 50 points, the indicator shows a negative perception of current conditions compared to the last six months.

The Expectations Index dropped 0.2 point to 60 points. As it is significantly above the 50-point dividing line, the index indicates optimistic expectations for the next six months.

A total of 1,467 companies were interviewed, of which 570 were small, 547 were medium-sized and 350 were large, between May 2 and 6, 2022.
