Confidence of Industrial Entrepreneurs falls again in March, and reaches 49.9 points

The Industrial Entrepreneur Confidence Index (ICEI), released this Friday (10) by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), fell in March, reaching 49.9 points. According to the CNI, the result is 0.7 points lower than that registered in the immediately previous month.

In February, the ICEI showed a slight recovery, interrupting a series of declines in the indicator. The March result, according to the CNI, can be explained by the worsening in the assessment of the current conditions of the Brazilian economy and companies.

The ICEI is composed of the expectations index and the current conditions perception index. The Present Conditions Index dropped 1.7 points in March compared to February and dropped to 44.2.

According to CNI’s manager of Economic Analysis, Marcelo Azevedo, the businessman has lost confidence, but the lack of confidence is not yet widespread among industrial entrepreneurs.

“In the reading that we have, it is being very difficult for the entrepreneur to read this scenario. He’s been fluctuating a lot these past few months regarding confidence or lack of confidence. We perceive, from the components of the index, that there is a very large contamination of the assessment of current business conditions, a very negative assessment of current business conditions, on the other hand, expectations remain positive”, analyzes the CNI specialist.

The Expectations Index was practically stable in March, with a retreat of 0.2 points, falling to 52.7 points.

Entrepreneurs’ optimism manifests itself only in relation to their own companies, which registered 56.1 points, while in relation to the Brazilian economy there is pessimism, with the indicator below the line of 50 points, being registered at 46.0 points.

The CNI survey ranges from 0 to 100, with a 50-point dividing line. Values below this cutoff indicate distrust. A total of 1,396 companies were interviewed, 559 of which were small, 510 medium-sized and 327 large-sized between March 1st and March 7th, 2023.
