Confidential archives about murder of John F. Kennedy cite Brazil

After order of Donald Trump, the US government released thousands of records related to the murder of former President John F. Kennedy (JFK).

The Republican signed an executive order as soon as he assumed the position determining the dissemination of thousands of archives related to Kennedy deaths, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

Brazil is cited in some recorded records. One of the documents deals with an assistance offer by China and Cuba in 1961, and another about Cuba’s influence and the “advertising operation” of the Caribbean country.

Offer of assistance from China and Cuba

According to one of the archives, dated 1961, Mao Tsé-Tung, then leader of the Communist Party of China, and Fidel Castro, then Prime Minister of Cuba, offered “materials,“ support ”and“ volunteers ”to Leonel Brizola, then governor of Rio Grande do Sul, in August of that year.

At the time, Brizola was leading efforts to succession of power in Brazil after the resignation of Jânio Quadros, as stressed by the document produced by CIA, the US intelligence agency.

According to the Federal Senate of Brazil, citing historians, pictures planned what they called “AutoGolpe”, because it did not expect the resignation to be accepted and that, with the cry of authorities and the population, it would gain more power next.

However, parliamentarians would have understood “the intentions of Jânio Quadros and acted to abort the coup plan”, accepting the resignation and working for the inauguration of Vice President João Goulart-who was deposed in 1964 with the military dictatorship.

The Cia Pontua archive that Brizola only thanked the help of help from the leaders of Cuba and China, but eventually refused it. According to CIA, the governor did not want to take the crisis in Brazil to the international scenario.

An agency officer highlighted at the time: “Brizola was obviously afraid that if offers were accepted, the United States could intervene.”

Another document, dating from July 1964, reports what would be “Cuba’s subversion efforts in Latin America” since July 1963.

The archive states that the government of the Caribbean country believed that it was possible to make a “second Cuba” in Venezuela. He points out that Che Guevara said at the time that the spread of the “revolution” was “our responsibility and is part of our daily concern.”

In addition, he points out that “evidence presented in the follow-up index of each country show that Cuba continued, since the beginning of the year, to promote funding and, otherwise, to support pro-barrel groups, such as individuals in Argentina, Brazil (before April revolt), Chile, Panama, British Guiana and other countries”. In referring to the “April revolt”, the document concerns the military coup.

In another stretch, the archive says that the overthrow of then -President João Goulart with the dictatorship in Brazil was a “severe defeat” for Cuba.

In the part that specifically addresses Brazil, the document says that, before Goulart’s fall, Cuba was involved in “subversive activities” in the country, providing “funds”, guerrilla training and advertising support for communist and pro-communist groups.

These operations would happen mainly from the Cuban embassy in Rio de Janeiro. Still according to Americans, the country’s ambassador would have said in privately that Brizola would have the “best prospects to start a revolution.

“Cuba also maintained substantial advertising operation in Brazil, mainly by the local Latin press office”, comments the document.

“Brazil was also used as a traffic area for some Latin American subversives returning to their countries after receiving Cuba training,” he adds to another stretch.
