An Congolese vaccine campaign has been launched in the Congo in an effort to contain an outbreak in the northwestern city of Badaka, the World Health Organization said today.
So far two people have succumbed to the disease in the city that of one million inhabitants. The first death from the new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo was announced on April 21 and the second yesterday Tuesday. This is the 14th outbreak of the disease in the Central African country.
200 doses of vaccine
The WHO said in a statement that about 200 doses of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine against Ebola had been sent to Badaka from Goma in the east, with more expected in the coming days.
So far, 233 contacts of the first two cases have been identified and monitored, he added.
Doctors use this vaccine to break the transmission chain by immunizing the contacts of confirmed cases.
