Leaders of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs have expressed concern about the possibility of Turkey launching a new military invasion of Syria.
In a joint statement, members of Congress called on Ankara to refrain from such action, as they said a new invasion would undermine ongoing efforts to eliminate Islamic State and further exacerbate the existing humanitarian crisis.
“We are extremely concerned about the continuing threats from Turkey to launch a new military invasion of northern Syria. Previous Turkish invasions have disrupted operations against Islamic State by US forces and their allies and exacerbated its terrible humanitarian crisis. An additional Turkish invasion would have the same devastating effects, including the displacement of countless vulnerable Syrians, and we strongly urge the Turkish government and allied forces to refrain from any military action so that the focus on northern Syria remains secure. “Islamic State and to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe,” said a senior US congressional official.
