The countdown has begun. Tomorrow Tuesday (17/10) the American House of Representativesparalyzed for more than two weeks due to the intra-party conflict of Republicansis expected to vote on the possible election of its new president, according to a notification received by its members yesterday Sunday.
Congress, the bicameral American parliament, is divided. The Senate is controlled by President Joe Biden’s Democrats. The House of Representatives is controlled by Republicans, but the current period has been in unprecedented chaos.
Most of the institution’s powers have been suspended, following the surprise ouster of Speaker Kevin McCarthy on October 3, when he became a victim of the clash between so-called moderates and Trumps in the Republican Party.
Right-wing MPs have since failed to agree on his successor.
After a week of high tensions and several reversals, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, a loyalist of Donald Trump, is currently the only Republican candidate.
But he did not appear to be able to secure the support of a sufficient number of his colleagues to be elected.
A vote is still expected to take place at 12:00 (21:00 Greek time) tomorrow Tuesday. Its outcome is uncertain to say the least.
“It’s time to get down to business,” Jim Jordan opined via X (formerly Twitter), urging his colleagues to bury the hatchet and rally around his candidacy.
Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel increased the pressure. The Parliament is currently unable to vote on any measure to grant aid to the historical ally of the USA.
Joe Biden’s Democratic party, a minority in the House, has practically been reduced to a spectator role in the chaotic proceedings in Congress.
At least absent a surprise alliance with moderate Republicans, which could also end this unprecedented situation.
