In an interview with CNN This Thursday (28), the coordinator of International Relations at FAAP and specialist in the United States, Fernanda Magnotta, said that an eventual visit by the President of the American Chamber, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan could have “quite complicated” consequences.
The analysis involves one of the main topics of today’s conversation between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping: China’s defense of the principle of a “one China” and strong opposition to Taiwan’s independence.
“For some time now, we have been saying that the bilateral relationship between the United States and China is currently in one of the worst conditions over the last few decades,” explained Magnotta.
According to the expert, current geopolitical conditions — including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — have exacerbated this scenario. If the US positioned itself in favor of Taiwan independence, the economic reverberations would follow the political and military consequences, said the professor.
“China defines the ‘one China’ policy as the main line of conduct of its foreign policy, that is, it is necessary, in order to maintain diplomatic and commercial relations with China, to recognize only Beijing’s command over all these areas, including Taiwan,” Magnotta detailed.
So far, the US has shown no support for the island’s independence, as was reinforced in the telephone conversation between Biden and Xi on Thursday.
“Today I spoke with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China as part of our efforts to deepen lines of communication, responsibly manage our differences and address issues of mutual interest,” the US president tweeted.
Biden stressed that US policy towards Taiwan has not changed and that the country strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine the peace on the small island.
