Consequences of war for world order are unpredictable, says Carlos França at the UN

Heads of State and Government from several countries participate this week in the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), which takes place in New York, in the United States.

In a speech to the representatives of the countries this Thursday (22), the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos França, addressed the risks of the escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“Continued conflicts endanger the lives of innocent civilians and jeopardize the security of millions of families in other regions, especially in developing countries. The risks of escalation arising from the current dynamics of the conflict are simply too great and their consequences for the world order unpredictable,” said the minister.

Carlos França stated that the UN Security Council is the ideal forum for the search for peaceful solutions and that diplomacy must prevail at this time.

“Only diplomacy brings prospects of viable solutions to conflicts between countries. This is not the time to accentuate points of view or isolate partners. The priority of this council must be to create conditions for the countries to reach negotiations for a peaceful solution to the conflict”, he pointed out.

The minister recalled that September marks the seventh month since the start of the war in Ukraine. “This week marks seven months since the start of the conflict. Tens of thousands of people, many of them innocent civilians, lost their lives. There are millions of refugees and internally displaced people whose return to their homes remains uncertain,” he said.

France said that in recent months, the UN council has received numerous reports of human rights violations.

“Brazil condemns the abuses and defends impartial investigations of the facts so that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. We also reiterate our call for full respect for international humanitarian law by our partners. We have an urgent task ahead of us to engage our partners in dialogue with the aim of securing an immediate ceasefire and the opening of negotiations for a peace agreement,” said the minister.
