Conservative televangelist Pat Robertson has died

The well-known, conservative televangelist Pat Robertsonwho often caused a stir with his extreme positions, passed away at the age of 93, the TV channel he founded almost 60 years ago announced today.

Robertson breathed his last at his home in Virginia Beach early this morning, according to The Christian Broadcasting Network.

The extremely popular presenter of Christian programs founded CBN in 1960. There he hosted a daily ultraconservative show, “The 700 Club,” which he claimed averaged one million American viewers.

Robertson was instrumental in rallying conservative Christians and electing Ronald Reagan to the presidency of the United States in the 1980s. In 1988, he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination. Idry the Christian Coalition, an organization known for its opposition to abortion and its fight for prayer in schools. In the 1990s it was arguably one of the most powerful political pressure groups and according to the New York Times in 1994 it had 4 million members. At the turn of the century, however, it lost almost half of its members and much of its influence.

Born in 1930 in Lexington, Virginia, Robertson was often provocative with his extreme statements. In 2002, a year after the 9/11 attacks, he said that Muslims are worse than Nazis. In 2005, he called for the assassination of then-Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who accused him of funding Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda.
