Consortium to exploit Chile's vast lithium deposits

Chile's public company CODELCO, ranked first in the world in copper production, and the private company SQM, which is among those with the largest lithium production in the world, signed an agreement yesterday Friday to give birth to a giant new group that will take over the exploitation of the of giant lithium deposits in the Latin American state. Chile ranks second in the world in the production of this white precious metal, which is mainly used in electric car batteries and is seen as a key player in the effort to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, which is largely blamed for the climate crisis. The joint venture was agreed to develop lithium mining in the Atacama desert, in the north of the country, where there are deposits that are among the largest on the planet.
