Consum pays a new ‘covid premium’ to its employees for the pandemic and increases their salary by 1%

The supermarket cooperative Consum has decided to reward with a new ‘Covid premium’ of 300 euros on average per person to its workers in stores and logistics platforms in order to compensate the dedication and effort made throughout 2020 due to the pandemic.

This premium, company sources have reported, represents an amount of more than 4.7 million euros, will affect the operating personnel of supermarkets and platforms, which represents 95% of the workforce, and will be paid in the January payroll, within the 2020/2021 financial year.

This ‘Covid bonus’ is added to that delivered by the cooperative in March 2020, which represented an average reward of 283 euros per person, also for the operating personnel of supermarkets and platforms, whose amount amounted to 3 , 8 million euros. At that time, it was a compensation for the great effort and dedication made by the workforce, mostly operational personnel, since the State of Alarm was decreed in Spain on March 14.

In addition, this ‘Covid cousin’ will join the 1% salary increase approved by the Cooperative for 100% of the workforce. This increase, which will begin to be applied in February, represents a investment of more than 3.2 million euros and is about 185 euros gross per year, on average.

Record job creation

Consum has generated more than 1,400 jobs during 2020, reaching a workforce of more than 17,400 people, pending the exact figures, since the cooperative’s fiscal year ends on January 31, 2021, according to the statement of the company.

2020 has also been a record year in terms of contracts made due to the pandemic. For this reason, Consum has hired 6,149 people and carried out 2,873 extensions of the working day since the health crisis began.
