Consumer confidence rises again in June, points out FGV

Published this Friday (24) by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), the Consumer Confidence Index (ICC) of the Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV-Ibre) rose 3.5 points in June and reached the middle of the year at 79 spots.

The index ranges from zero to 200, and has its neutral point at 100, from which variations are interpreted as positive or negative trends, depending on the direction.

The improvement in consumer confidence was noticed in all income groups, but it was not enough to fully replace the losses in the poorest group, with a family income of up to R$ 2.1 thousand. In it, the result recovers only 45% of what was lost in May.

The overall result, however, also made the quarterly moving average rise, which rose by 1.4 and reached 77.7 points. The indicator is made up of two components, and both showed positive variation in the sixth month of the year: the Current Situation Index rose 1.3 points to 70.4, while the Expectations Index advanced 4.9 to 85.9 spots.

Ibre’s poll coordinator, economist Viviane Seda Bittencourt highlights that, despite the improvement in the indicator, the consultation shows heterogeneity in consumers’ perceptions.

“Even considering the financial incentives package, the assessment of the current situation by low-income consumers continues to deteriorate, while their outlook for the coming months remains volatile, revealing high uncertainty. Consumers with higher income perceive an improvement in their financial situation and for the second month. Possibly an effect of the stimulus given by the government”, says the economist.

The researcher highlights that the prospects of consumers for the next six months was the highlight of the consultation. This attribute had dropped sharply in May.

The improvement replaces only 47% of the losses in this attribute that occurred in the fifth month of the year.

There was also an improvement in the purchase intention of durable goods. Despite the evolution, the level remains below that recorded in the pre-pandemic.
