The Ministry of Consumer Affairs will sign an order this Thursday to regulate the market for hygienic masks, something that it had been working on for months. Among other novelties, they must have a filtration greater than 90% and those made of fabric cannot be sold as hygienic.
In this order, which Alberto Garzon will sign today, the labeling and marketing obligations are deepened. It defines the concept of the mask, the accessories, and the filtration efficiency it should have.
On the product packaging, It is mandatory to indicate the tested data regarding the filtration efficiency of the material and the resistance to breathing or air permeability and the laboratory used for its realization. In reusable products, at least the data obtained before and after the total of washing cycles indicated by the manufacturer must be included.
Furthermore, one month after the entry into force of this order, only those tested by an accredited laboratory may be marketed as hygienic masks.
Consumption remembers that some member states have chosen either to regulate or to prohibit the use of hygienic masks in certain spaces. France bans the marketing of hygienic masks with a filtration efficiency of less than 90% and Germany has prohibited the use of cloth masks in public spaces.
