At least 400 police officers in Germany's federal states are facing disciplinary proceedings or investigations for allegedly holding far-right views or espousing conspiracy ideologies, according to a report in the current issue of Stern magazine. The publication is based on data from the ministries of interior of 16 states, the magazine explains. Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Bremen and Thuringia did not provide updated figures. North Rhine-Westphalia's interior minister, Herbert Royle (CDU), told Stern that police officers who defy the constitution and hold “extremist” views pose a “great danger to democracy and the rule of law”, adding that he believes they are sworn officers and does not want such people to serve in the ranks of law enforcement. “We live in a time when far-right extremists are deliberately trying to destabilize the police,” Uli Grotz, the (SPD) parliamentarian responsible for overseeing law enforcement, told the magazine.
