Convicted of killing his father and stepmother, Gil Rugai is released after 21 years in prison; MP will appeal

Former seminarian Gil Grego Rugai, sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing his father and stepmother, was released on Wednesday afternoon (14) after a court decision that allowed him to progress to an open regime.

He had been in prison since 2004, after killing his own father, Luiz Carlos Rugai, and his stepmother, Alessandra de Fátima Troitino, inside the house where they lived in Perdizes, in the west zone of the capital of São Paulo.

In 2013, he was sentenced to 33 years and nine months in prison for the double homicide.

Since 2016, he has been serving his sentence at Tremembé II Penitentiary, in the interior of São Paulo, known as the “prison of the famous”.

According to the São Paulo Penitentiary Administration Secretariat (SAP), Rugai left prison at 4:17 pm this Wednesday (14), wearing an electronic ankle bracelet and must comply with some precautionary measures.

THE CNN sought out the São Paulo Public Prosecutor’s Office, which stated that it will appeal the decision.

Gil Rugai’s defense was also contacted, but had not received a response by the time this report was published.
