Cooperation plans in the field of hydrogen by Bulgartransgaz and DESFA

The Bulgarian National Gas System Operator, Bulgartransgaz, and the National Natural Gas System Operator (DESFA. SA) will work together in the hydrogen sector.

The CEO of Bulgartransgaz EAD, Vladimir Malinov, and the President and CEO of DESFA SA, Maria Rita Gali, signed a letter of intent for cooperation in the field of hydrogen, Bulgartransgaz announced today in Sofia, in a bulletin.

The leaders of the two companies emphasize the key importance of hydrogen and its great benefits to the environment, the economy and society. The applications of hydrogen and the technologies for its production, transport and use can jointly contribute to the creation of sustainable industrial jobs and to the achievement of Europe’s energy and climate goals under the Paris Agreement.

The operators note that they will continue the successful cooperation for the development of cross-border energy infrastructure, as well as work on joint large-scale investment projects.

The companies will therefore support the development and promotion of hydrogen technologies and systems and the creation of a hydrogen market in the EU.

DESFA has submitted a proposal, part of the integrated White Dragon project, in the framework of the Major Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) for the development of the European value chain “Hydrogen Technologies and Systems”. The project proposal includes a comprehensive assessment and analysis of the shortcomings of the gas transmission system in Greece, regarding its readiness to accept and transfer increasing percentages of hydrogen mixed with natural gas, the press release states.

Bulgartransgaz reports that it is developing a Transformation of the Bulgarian Gas Transmission System, which provides for the assessment of the transmission system in terms of its readiness to accept mixtures of natural gas with certain quantities of hydrogen and its subsequent adjustment for the transport of natural gas and mixtures.

As the two transmission systems are interconnected, BTG and DESFA will explore opportunities for possible collaboration, including the exchange of information, the conduct of joint technical studies and project-related feasibility studies.

The two companies will also consider other possible related initiatives in the hydrogen value chain that integrate or create synergies in the projects.
