Coordinator of the tax reform group in the Chamber says there will be no tax increase

The coordinator of the group to deal with tax reform in the Chamber of Deputies, Reginaldo Lopes (PT-MG), assured, this Thursday (9), that the unification of taxes will not result in an increase in tax collection.

“There will be no increase in the tax burden, on the contrary. We want to simplify and make Brazil increase its consumption base, so it cannot increase the burden of indirect taxes in the country.

The statement was made shortly after a meeting at the Ministry of Finance with the extraordinary secretary for tax reform, Bernard Appy, in which deputy Reginaldo Lopes said that he sought to know “what the secretary thinks”.

Reginaldo Lopes also stated that it is necessary to clarify points with sectors that are concerned. Like, for example, services. “There are sectors that think that the unification of these five taxes and the creation of the value added tax will increase the tax rate, but they need to know the numbers better and will realize that the cumulative effect makes them pay more than they imagine.”

]“Right now, we need to understand which sectors we need to negotiate. Because it is a collegiate that has the task of seeking to build greater convergence to allow the amendment to reach the plenary and be approved”, explained Lopes.

The PT deputy has acted as the government’s main articulator in Congress for tax reform – seen as one of the priorities of the management of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) for this year. Lopes said that a meeting will still be scheduled to discuss the schedule of performance of the working group, together with the rapporteur for the tax reform in the Chamber, deputy Aguinaldo Ribeiro (PP-PB).

The Minister of the Institutional Relations Secretariat, Alexandre Padilha, confirmed, also this Thursday (9), that the federal government will not present a new Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) of the tax reform.

The government’s intention, according to Padilha, is to take as a basis the PEC that is already in the Chamber of Deputies, make adjustments to the text in dialogue with parliamentarians, and accelerate the course of the reform in Congress.

The Minister of Finance himself, Fernando Haddad, asked the PT bench to reinforce, in a meeting on Wednesday (8), the need for a quick approval of the tax reform.
