Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, recently appointed president of COP30, which will take place in Belém in November, declared in an interview with CNN that the event will seek “realistic ambitions” in combating climate change.
Corrêa do Lago emphasized the importance of finding a balance between ambitious and achievable goals.
“The big secret is to be able to find ambitions that are realistic and that encourage people to want more,” said the ambassador.
The diplomat cited the example of China, which exceeded expectations in areas such as electric vehicles and solar energy, demonstrating that seemingly ambitious goals can be achieved with adequate planning.
Challenges and opportunities of COP30
Asked about realistic ambitions for COP30, Corrêa do Lago highlighted that it is still early to announce specific themes, but anticipated that the conference will address crucial issues such as financing and adaptation to climate change.
“We cannot announce that we will solve absolutely everything in Belém, but we can make really significant progress in several areas”, explained the ambassador.
Corrêa do Lago highlighted the importance of restoring confidence in the fight against climate change, showing that there are technologies, resources and companies committed to sustainable solutions.
The COP30 president also emphasized Brazil’s unique role in this scenario:
“Brazil is, above all, a collection of solutions against climate change”, says the ambassador. He highlighted that the conference in Belém will be an opportunity for the country to show its relevance and leadership in the global climate agenda.
