COP26: China and US reach ‘joint statement on enhancing climate action’

China and the United States have reached a “joint statement on strengthening climate action,” Chinese climate envoy Xie Zhenhua said in Glasgow today.

“Both sides recognize the gap between the ongoing efforts and the objectives of the Paris Agreement, so we will jointly step up climate action,” the Chinese spokesman told the UN Climate Conference COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland. .

The agreement “shows that co-operation is the only way forward for China and the United States,” Xie said, as tensions between the two countries recently appeared to be shifting to the diplomatic climate file.

In a tweet, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, based in Glasgow, welcomed the agreement, which he saw as “an important step in the right direction”.

China is the world’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions and the United States is the second largest.

US President Joe Biden, who attended Glasgow at the start of the conference last week, called the absence of Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at COP26 a “big mistake”, accusing him of “disregarding the climate crisis”.

“As the two main world powers, China and the United States must take responsibility to work with other parties to combat climate change,” the Chinese envoy said.

“COP26 is considered critical, as the planet is, according to the UN, on a” catastrophic “temperature rise of 2.7 ° C compared to the pre-industrial era, well beyond the goals of the Paris Agreement aimed at limited overheating.” well below “2 ° C, and if possible at 1,5 ° C.

Speaking shortly after his counterpart, US climate envoy John Kerry welcomed the “roadmap” which aims to set out “how to curb global warming and work together to increase climate ambition”.

In a statement posted on the Internet, the two countries pledged to work at COP26 for “an ambitious, balanced and inclusive effect on mitigation (adjustment), adjustment and financial support”.

They pledge to “take more intensive measures to increase ambitions by the 2020s”, reaffirming their commitment to the temperature targets set out in the Paris Agreement.

European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans also welcomed the announcement. “Beyond the COP, it is important to the world,” he told AFP.

“If the United States and China, with all their difficulties in other matters, send a message that this issue goes beyond the other, that it concerns the survival of mankind, this helps the international community a great deal to accept the fact that it must act now “, he added, noting however that a lot of work needs to be done” to reach an agreement in COP26.
