COP26 is the time for Brazil to gain centrality, says expert

In an interview with CNN this Monday (1st), Carlos Gustavo Poggio, PhD in international relations, stated that COP26, the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, is the ideal moment for Brazil to gain centrality with regard to the environment .

“In international relations, the environmental issue has acquired a centrality in the agenda, mainly driven by European countries and now it is also very present in the United States. There is also a sense of urgency, a situation in which the time to act on this environmental issue is getting shorter and shorter”, said Poggio.

“With this environmental agenda, it would be time for Brazil to gain centrality. Brazil has a lot to say on the environmental issue, and could even negotiate with developed countries to get some resources, as they have pledged to pay resources to developing countries to fight climate change issues.”

Without the presence of President Jair Bolsonaro (no party), Brazil begins its participation in COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, with the speech of the Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, who will address the global leaders from a distance. 11 am today.

Despite the absence of the federal government in Glasgow, the specialist believes that we will have a very important presence of Brazilian civil society, with a series of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and at least 13 governors.

“Even if [o governo federal] is absent, you cannot say that Brazil is absent.”
