COP26: Marine talks about “producing water” and recovering basins for next generations

Participating in COP26 this Thursday (4th), the Minister of Regional Development, Rogério Marinho, said that the watershed treatment programs have the potential to “produce water” for future generations.

“(Water) is a finite good, and if it is not treated well, it will not reach the next generations”, says the minister.

According to Marinho, this “production” will be possible with the treatment of degraded basins and public and private investment defined by the new Legal Framework for Sanitation.

“With the Legal Framework for Sanitation, we are going to take treated water to 99% of the Brazilian territory by 2033. In homes, domestic sewage for 100 million Brazilians,” guarantees the minister.

The Ministry of Regional Development states that Brazil will invest R$ 70 billion per year over the next decade with the participation of the private sector through auctions for basic sanitation, sanitary sewage and urban solid waste.

numbers so far

Despite the numbers in the order of billions provided by the ministry, the first public notice raised only R$ 67 million, with 26 approved projects for the revitalization of the São Francisco, Parnaíba and Rio Grande basins, covering 250 municipalities in ten states.

“In the second public notice, we will have greater demand, we have eight companies that have already signed protocols of intent with us and another 20 that are seeking this partnership and are about to sign,” says Marinho.

The MDR did not disclose how much it expects to receive from the basic sanitation auctions that will be held between the end of this year and the first quarter of 2022.

For the sanitary sewage auction, scheduled for early 2022, the MDR expects to raise R$470 million.

According to the ministry, the urban solid waste auctions should raise R$ 3.3 billion by the second half of next year.
