“Hypocrisy is enough”: its president Mexico, The Man Manuel Lopez Obrador, likened the climate summit to COP26, with the World Economic Forum of Davos, while he stressed that his country has started the largest reforestation program in the world.
“These sessions are similar to those of Davos”, said the Mexican president yesterday Wednesday. The veteran Mexican left-wing politician was among the heads of state who did not travel to the United Kingdom for the summit.
“Do you remember the Davos meetings with the technocrats and the neoliberals?” flew during the daily press conference he gives, referring to the eponymous meeting of the world economic and political elite at a ski resort in Switzerland that is organized every year.
“The powerful increase their oil production while holding meetings for the protection of the environment”
The Mexican president pointed out that COP26 includes the leaders of the most powerful states in the world, who “Increase their oil production while holding meetings for the protection of the environment”. “And then they arrive with their government planes,” he added ironically. “Well, hypocrisy and figure are enough. “The monstrous inequality that exists in the world must be fought, that is why I am going to speak to the UN,” he continued.
The Mexican president is expected next week in New York, on one of his few trips abroad since taking office in late 2018. His country takes over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in November.
“If you want to protect the environment, you have to make decisions and act, not give reasons“, he said. “There is no other country that invests $ 1.3 billion a year in reforestation,” he added.
Mr Lopez Obrador was referring to the Sembrando Vida (“Plant Life”) program presented to US Special Envoy John Kerry a week before COP26 began.
The program envisions creating 15,000 jobs to plant one billion trees in more than 32 Mexican states.
