COP26: “We will reduce greenhouse gases by 50% by 2030”, says Environment Minister

The Minister of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, presented, this Monday morning (1st), Brazil’s goals at COP26, more daring than those initially considered. According to the minister, Brazil should reduce 50% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and neutralize carbon emissions by 2050.

“Today we present a new, more ambitious climate target, going from 43% to 50% by 2030; and carbon neutrality until 2050, which will be formalized during COP26”, said the minister in the morning. “I reinforce our commitments with the generation of an economy neutral in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, but at the same time guaranteeing the generation of jobs and income”, completed Leite.

Initially, the government’s proposal was to present a reduction of between 45% and 48% of emissions by the end of the decade, as anticipated by CNN’s international affairs analyst, Lourival Sant’Anna, on Sunday (31). There was also the expectation that Brazil would not sign any decision related to the neutralization of carbon emissions until the middle of the century.

The minister made the achievement of the goals conditional on the inflow of money. “Financing is urgent so that the world can face the challenges presented. It is essential that we have robust volumes, and in the necessary quantities, so that the transition and construction of this new economy takes place in a fair way, in each region of the planet.”

Leite also said that, in Brazil, the biggest responsibility is with those who have more money. “The richest and most developed must be more ambitious in their curves to reduce emissions towards neutrality by 2050, so that, together, we can act as a united nation, towards creating a fair and inclusive green economy.

President Jair Bolsonaro participated via recorded video and said that the proposal for the coming years is “to transform Brazil into a green power”. “Brazil is part of the solution (for climate goals) and the results achieved by 2020 show that we can be more ambitious”.
