In an interview with CNN this Monday (8), the president of the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), Marina Grossi, stated that COP26 is essential to define the “how to act” to try to curb climate change.
“This is the COP of ambition because we are talking about reaching 2ºC, but everyone is talking about reaching 1.5ºC, about being more ambitious. But it is also the COP of ‘how’ to do this”, he said.
She highlighted that the climate issue should be on the agenda of any government, any campaign.
“And there is a very important point, which are carbon credits. We have signs and documents showing that this famous article 6 [do Acordo de Paris] it is very important for Brazil”, he said.
“We have a lot of forestry assets and keeping the forest standing by selling carbon credits is what will finance the chairs of the forest economy. This is what can maintain and change, for example, the HDI of the Amazon biome, where we have a large part of illegal deforestation.”
She also highlighted that, since the Paris Agreement in 2015, Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) has been central to these discussions.
“Since the Paris Accord, the whole world has been on this agenda. Before, in the Kyoto Protocol, we had a referral for developed countries and another for developing countries. Now, everyone has a responsibility. Therefore, there is only one type of development”, he explained.
“And we see big competitors, like China and the US, all trying to go into this low-carbon race. What remains now is what speed, what scale are we going to give to what we call a climate emergency.”
The specialist also praised the participation in the Climate Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, of different sectors and representatives of Brazilian society.
“We had 12 mayors and governors present. We also had indigenous people, representatives of racial movements. It is interesting to see how the complexity of Brazilian society is present and making itself heard, in addition to the negotiators and the government”, he said.
