Copacabana Beach is “hugged” in an act on Oceans Day

About three thousand people went to the beach of Copacabana in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro , to “embrace” the sea. The act was promoted by the organization Route Brasil, this Wednesday (8), to celebrate World Oceans Day.

The volunteers held hands, forming a human chain that went from the Copacabana fort to Leme, about four kilometers long. There were 25 meeting points along the entire edge.

The action aimed to symbolize and reinforce, according to the organization, the affection, care and sense of community between man and nature. The embrace of the ocean was also performed on the beaches of South Beach, in Miami and Carcavelos, in Lisbon, simultaneously.

In addition to the act, the group also carried out a task force to collect garbage in the sand of the postcard of Rio de Janeiro. At least 20,000 items were collected.

This was the second time the organization has promoted hugging as an action on World Ocean Day. In 2019, more than 15,000 people gathered on Barra beach, West Zone of Rio, for the act and collected more than 100,000 items that should have gone to the trash instead of the sands.
