A copy of the first edition of the first book in the Harry Potter saga sold for US$ 471,000 in the United States, this Thursday (9), in what auctioneers classified as a world record for a work of 20th century fiction.
The 1997 British hardcover edition of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, with a color illustration on the cover, was described by Heritage Auctions as “magical, incredibly bright and nearly untouched”.
The book was published in the United States as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”.
The Dallas-based auction house said only 500 copies with the specific binding were printed. The final price was more than six times higher than the initial estimate, which was $70,000.
Previous prices for first editions of Harry Potter books have been around $110,000 and $138 thousand.
