Corinth Canal: Increased ship crossings in the first month of reopening

AEDIK, a 100% subsidiary of the Superfund that manages the Corinth Canal, has been fully operational since the beginning of July, bringing new development and significant benefits to the local community and the national economy.

Already within the first month (4/07-04/08), in the context of the first phase of its reopening, the Corinth Canal proves its pivotal role for maritime transport, as it is the shortest and safest sea route for ships coming from ports of the Ionian, the Adriatic, southern Italy, but also for ships that pass through the Strait of Messina in the direction of ports of the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea and vice versa.

Vessels that have made crossings through the Isthmus of Corinth Canal come from 45 different countries with the main ones being France, Germany, the USA, Estonia, Norway, Spain and New Zealand.

In this time, since the re-opening of the Canal, there have been over 1,743 watercraft crossings, of which 160 commercial class crossings such as cargo ships, tankers and tugboats and 1,583 tourist class crossings, i.e. cruise ships, commercial yachts and private pleasure boats.

It is noted that the crossings in the tourist category, in Cruise ships, in private and professional pleasure boats, are increased by 60%, 3% and 23%, compared to the corresponding period of 2019 when the Canal was in full operation.

It is recalled that in the fall, when the summer season will end and the passage of ships will be very limited, the Canal will stop operating for a few months, with the aim of completing the second phase of the project.
